Spring Into Car Maintenance

Spring is often seen as a great time to take care of some maintenance around the house, but don’t forget about your car maintenance too! Often times people use spring as a sign to declutter, check batteries and bulbs, deep clean and take care of small projects around the home. The same can, and should, be done with your vehicle!

From cleaning out your car of and junk or trash, to washing off any winter grime – a good deep clean is a great way to start off the season. General car maintenance is just as important too! Below are just a few maintenance items you can do on your own – which can also help you see if you need to visit a professional.

Check Your Fluids

From windshield washer fluid to coolant to power steering fluid – it’s important to make sure all fluids are clean and full. Luckily, vehicle manufacturers make it pretty easy to check fluid on your own. Each reservoir usually has both minimum and maximum lines to let you know how full they should be.

Replace Your Windshield Wiper Blades

Did you know you’re supposed to change your windshield wiper blades every 6 – 12 months? Spring is usually the rainiest season – so make sure your vehicle is prepared for those April showers.

Check Your Tires

Often times, we don’t think about our tires until something happens to them. Now is a great time to check things like your tire tread and tire pressure, and look for any signs you might need to get them looked at by a professional.

Any easy way to check your tire tread is the “penny test.” Insert a penny into your tire tread, with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires! If it’s close, it’s a great reminder to get them checked soon.

Some newer cars have sensors that tell you the pressure of your tires when they are low. If your vehicle doesn’t, you can purchase a tire pressure gauge. You place the gauge on the valve stem on the tire and press down – that easy! If your pressure is low, you can easily fill up at most gas stations.

Also, don’t forget to rotate your tires if it has been a while!

Replace Your Air Filters

Often times we forget to replace our car air filters like we do the ones in our home. This is a good time to check and replace any filters that may need it. This helps keep your car clean and your heat/air conditioning working properly.
